Formed by psycologist María C. Ruiz and, her daughter, biologist Katya Rusi, Florian’s aromaterapia is an artisan- family company based in Spain.

The goals of Florian’s are to offer sustainable and natural essential oils and other aromatic products as well as natural cosmetics for therapeutic purposes.

Their philosophy is to purchase only from small farmers and trusted producers and distillers, bottle in small batches so the product is fresh and educate people to use only what they need and not waste the precious products that Nature give us.

Apart from their company, María also has a project of growing aromatic plants in her land located in Malaga (Southern Spain) in order to increasethe flora biodiversity and so encourage the local community to do the same with their crops.

As a passionate advocate for environmental conservation, IJPHA editor/publisher Lora Cantele is deeply committed to the sustainability of medicinal and aromatic plants. These plants hold immense value, not only for their therapeutic and aromatic properties but also for their crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance.

The IJPHA provides the reader with informative articles highlighting the practical application of essential oils, research, sustainability and ethics, integrative health, business skills, and professionalism and provides a showcase for practitioner case studies. In a field where the mindful choice of essential oils matters as much as the chosen protocol, the IJPHA emphasizes the identification of aromatic plants of concern, sustainable and ethical practices, and focuses on lesser-known, but commercially available/sustainable essential oils within its pages. Lora Cantele is dedicated to providing information, articles, and resources that encourage sustainability and stewardship of medicinal and aromatic plants, and the earth so that future generations can continue to benefit from the rich diversity of medicinal and aromatic plants.

Through continuous learning and collaboration with experts in the field, Lora is committed to highlighting those engaged in sustainable practices that mitigate the impact of over-harvesting and habitat destruction. By providing articles, information, and resources through the IJPHA, her goal is to inform and contribute to a global movement that values and preserves the natural wealth of medicinal and aromatic plants, ensuring their availability for generations to come.

Aromatic plants and their essential oils are incredible. As an aromatherapy practitioner and educator, Amy Anthony, the founder of NYC Aromatica, recognizes impact the global essential oil and overall aromatic and herbal trade has on Earth. Driving philosophies of Amy’s practice are: accessible aromatherapy, “less is more: small is big” and local focus.

Sustainable aromatherapy in-practice includes working directly with aromatic plants through aromatic gardening, incense, teas and incorporating aromatic herbs into cooking. I believe many people turn to essential oils for their direct impact on emotions, feelings, memory and the unseeable realms such as spirit—yet everyone cannot access essential oils. Recognizing direct contact with aromatic plants in the aforementioned ways can be opening, inclusive and democratic.

This aligns with the “less is more: small is big” philosophy, where acknowledging that one drop of essential oil is all that is needed to affect mood, memory and touch a whole person: mind-body-spirit. This means using the least amount of plant needed for the biggest impact. Sharing impactful usage guidelines for all methods of application (e.g., topical, mindful diffusion) support this intention. “Less is more” also encompasses distilling locally grown plants to obtain hydrosols that I incorporate into my practice, as well as seeking artisanal distillers of essential oils and hydrosols when possible.

Which folds into learning about local aromatic plants. As the saying goes: “think global act local”. Why turn to Cedrus atlantica when Juniperus virginiana grows abundantly around me? Goldenrod and Queen Anne’s Lace are abundant and medicinal. Why turn to Eucalyptus from Australia when Rosemary grows here, even in my garden? Turning to local aromatic plants connects us to where we live and cuts down on immense supply chain issues including transportation and emissions.

“You don’t know what you don’t know.” Thanks to the Airmid Institute, I have greater awareness of sustainability issues and access to information and individuals who appreciate aromatics AND seek ways to reduce environmental, social and cultural harm. This helps me be the best practitioner and educator I aim to be.
